About Formaldehyde

At room temperature, formaldehyde is a gas. However it can be contained as liquid in a solution in concentrations up to 30-40%. Formaldehyde is stabilised with around 4% methanol. Formaldehyde is a potentially hazardous chemical, and is classified as an S1 Poison. It should only be handles in well ventilated areas, ideally with some form of fume extraction. This is especially true when being handles on an industrial scale.  For individuals who are exposed to Formaldehyde on a regular basis, exposure levels should be monitored accordingly.  Always consult the formaldehyde MSDS and wear all relevant Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Formaldehyde Uses

Uses for formaldehyde include preserving human tissue, such as preserving samples or embalming and for manufacturing glues and polymers. It can be used topically in medicine to dry the skin, such as in the treatment of warts. It is also used as a disinfectant as it kills most bacteria and fungi. Formaldehyde is widely used in laboratories for general analysis and testing.
