Safe Use of Hydrochloric Acid

Concentrated solutions of hydrochloric acid – commonly referred to as fuming hydrochloric acid – can release hazardous fumes when in contact with air.Even these fumes can have severe detrimental effects if inhaled or in contact with skin or eyes, with potential permanent effects on the respiratory tract.Symptoms range from simple irritation of the nose to pulmonary oedema, or mild dermatitis to severe skin burns. As such, it’s vital to follow safe procedures when handling this highly corrosive acid. A full MSDS sheet can be downloaded from our website. In addition, this compound must be stored in a well-ventilated area and away from strong oxidising agents, such as bleach (sodium hypochlorite, NaClO) or potassium permanganate (KMnO4). If mixed, chlorine gas is produced, which is also toxic.
