How is Muriatic Acid Synthesised?

This colourless acid with a strong, irritating smell can be used in many industrial applications. It’s been known to alchemists since the 15th century when it was called “spirits of salt” because it was produced from green vitriol (sulphuric acid) and rock salt (sodium chloride). It was used by many scientists throughout the ages, but its industrial production didn’t start until the Industrial Revolution. Today it’s still a popular compound used, for example, in the manufacture of PVC plastic and polyurethane.Currently, muriatic acid is prepared by mixing hydrogen chloride in water. As hydrogen chloride can be obtained in many different ways, typically the production of muriatic acid is associated with the production of other chemicals.Commercial solutions are usually sold with a maximum 38% HCl concentration. Higher values are possible, but require special storage and handling facilities (including low pressure and temperature) to limit evaporation. You can find further information about storage needs, and other safety issues, in the MSDS which is available to download from our website.
